Zerodha Review: My Roller Coaster Journey
Been getting tons of questions about Zerodha lately. Especially after my Groww and Scripbox reviews.
Time for the full story. Started using Zerodha in 2017. Right when I moved back from the US.
My mom was alone. Dad passed away when I was in college. Couldn't leave her anymore.
My Personal Zerodha Discovery Story ๐
Picture this. June 2017. I'm packing up our Fremont apartment after 8 years.
My wife was worried. "How will we invest in India? Their brokers charge so much!"
Coming from Schwab and Vanguard, Indian brokerage felt like highway robbery. Then my Citrix colleague mentioned Zerodha. "They charge just โน20 per trade," he said.
Downloaded Kite that evening. Within a week, we had our accounts ready.
Quick Zerodha Snapshot ๐

Active Users: 8.12 million (December 2024)
Market Share: 16.6% of retail trading (September 2024)
Assets Under Management: โน5.66 trillion
Valuation: $2 billion (bootstrap funded, no external investors)
The Good, The Bad, and My Analysis โ๏ธ
What I Absolutely Love ๐
Zero Delivery Charges Coming from Schwab's commission free trading, this felt familiar. No charges for long term investing. Perfect.
Flat โน20 Trading Fee Maximum โน20 per trade regardless of amount. Traded โน10,000 or โน10 lakh. Same fee. Brilliant pricing model.
Advanced Technology Stack My HappyFox engineering experience helps me appreciate good tech. Kite's API architecture is solid. Real time data flows smoothly.
Educational Excellence Varsity by Zerodha taught me Indian market nuances. Coming from US markets, this was invaluable. Free comprehensive modules.
What Could Be Better ๐ก
Technical Glitches Five major outages between October 2023 and July 2024. Longest was 44 minutes. F&O expiry days are especially problematic.
Customer Support Limitations Ticket based system only. No phone calls. Coming from Schwab's excellent phone support, this feels limited.
Competition Pressure Groww overtook them in user base. Now second largest. Market dynamics changing rapidly.

Red Flags and Honest Concerns ๐ฉ
Market Share Decline: Groww became #1 in user base. Zerodha now second. Pricing pressure increasing.
Technical Reliability: Five outages in 10 months. Unacceptable for serious traders. Infrastructure needs major upgrade.
SEBI Regulatory Pressure: Index derivatives regulations may cut revenue by 30-50%. Business model under threat.
Limited Global Access: No US stocks, international ETFs. NRIs need multiple platforms for diversification.

Zerodha vs The World: Conclusion ๐
After 7 years and โน15+ lakh invested through Zerodha, here's my honest take:
Zerodha built India's most sophisticated retail trading platform. Their technology leadership is undeniable. Educational commitment through Varsity changed the game.
But they're facing serious challenges. Groww overtook them in users. Technical issues increasing. Regulatory pressures mounting.
My wife recently switched her SIPs to Groww. "Zerodha feels too complex for simple investing," she said.
She's not wrong.
Zerodha excels at what they set out to do. Build tools for serious traders and investors. They succeeded brilliantly.
But the market evolved. Many users want simplicity over sophistication.
Bottom Line: 8.5/10 for experienced traders. 6.5/10 for beginners. Still the best platform for serious Indian market participation.
Choose Zerodha if you want to truly learn and master Indian markets. Choose others if you want simplicity.
