I prefer pirated VCD’s than going to movies in Kerala

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

pirated-vcd Don’t get me wrong. I do understand the seriousness of pirated DVD’s and VCD’s. I know how much revenue is lost from the film makers. I do respect their efforts as well. But sadly, I have to say, though I hate to – that I prefer to watch movies on pirated CD’s at home.

And I think I have a fair reason.

Since I relocated back to Cochin, I’ve been visiting the movies regularly (like I always have at all places I’ve been to – a good movie bluff that I am). I only go out with my family, and I do watch a good number of movies. Which makes me believe that I’m a decent potential “customer” – with pleasure.

But unlike in Chennai, Mumbai or Bangalore, I don’t seem to quite enjoy the movie going experience in Kerala. I hate to say this, but I have no threads to save. I thought its just me, but no, my family too declared after the first few months that in Kerala, its not that quite enjoyable.

The reasons are fair if not plenty.

I can’t find one theatre in Cochin city that has a planned car park.

There is no proper advanced booking (No no…of course I know there is one where they give you a number written on a small chit of paper).

There are always sweaty queues (even after booking) and rush which I hate.

Forget the theatre, I can’t find any place that has a proper rest room or even a walk way with fans at least.

Its alright if I were going to movies alone or with my friends. But when I’m with my family, its very un comfortable.

I’m not trying to exaggerate here or trying to belittle the theatres in Kerala. Its just my frustration that why aren’t anyone, (the film makers/ theatre owners) or who ever is responsible, is not doing anything about making the movie going experience pleasureable ?

I’m sure most of us love going to movies, despite all of us having DVD players at home. Its because of the love for the art form and the fun of it.

But gentlemen, if you want to save the film industry, please, you better look into this. Make better theatres, where people love to go, not a place for sweating it out. The rush and hustle is fun of course, but is that the only crowd you want to focus on ?

So next time when you appear on TV requesting us not to buy pirated VCD’s, please fucking understand that not everyone like you gets invited for premieres. We love movies as much as you do and we don’t want to help “thieves” either.

In my honest and humble opinion, the term “thief” better suits you and the theatre owners than the guy who sells pirated stuff. We pay you to watch movies and relax. You are not doing a favor for us by letting us in, alright ? Well, if you think it is – god bless the industry.

(Not intended to hurt anyone. Purely out of frustration.)

Cochin Bloggers Meetup at Cafe CoffeeDay

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

Just yesterday, the cochin bloggers group had a quick meetup at Cafe Coffeeday,.

27122008182

As usual, along with the steamy discussions, came up some productive thoughts too.

We were thinking of new ways to promote the “citizen blogging” concept for KeralaCitizenBloggers, and came up with an idea of viral video series for KCB. We made an instant video right from the place and look what we came up with.

We would be releasing more of the series soon.

The idea is to make awareness among the youth towards blogging, and how the power of blogging can help the society in a better way.

Bloggers who would like to join KCB can contact us here, just let us know why YOU ?

What did the Kerala CM really mean ? I couldn’t comprehend

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

I have no idea what Mr. Achutanandan meant when he said – “If it was not for Sandeeps house, not even a dog would have visited them.” I seriously missed it. No clue, no lights what so ever.

For a moment I thought this is a dialogue from some old malayalam movie. Typical. But from a CM of a state which boasts of literacy and all that..that was completely immoral, insensible and pathetic !

cartoon

But wait, may be Mr. Achutanandan made a remark that probably went right through my white cells, that I couldn’t understand him. May be he’s talking from a completely different level of understanding, that I couldn’t simply “get” it. You know guys beyond the common mans reach? Let me analyze what he meant.(Or rather try to)

If it was not for Sandeep’s house

– If it had not been a Martyrs house (POSSIBLE)
- If it had been a common mans house. (POSSIBLE)

Not even a dog would’ve visited him.

- No one would’ve visited him. (IMPOSSIBLE)
- No politician would’ve visited him. (POSSIBLE)
- Not even a politician would’ve visited him. (VERY MUCH)

Okay..okay…I get it. He meant –

“Had it been a common man’s  house, not even a single politician would’ve visited them including him”

That is very true. No doubt !

The problem here is with the media and the rest of us. Mr. Achutanandans level of thinking is definitely on a different plane, and what he actually meant is the above. He did not mean to disrespect the family. All he wanted to do was to go there and let the people know that he visited them, and he cared – because it was Sandeep. (Otherwise you know..)

And he wanted to tell India that he stood with the Martyrs, and he salutes them, for what they’ve done. He might have wanted to visit every Martyrs house, but in the current situation, I don’t think he will go to any other house.

But one thing still fascinates me. How civilized Mr. Achutanandan is and his proficiency in the languages. James Bond should learn from him how a sophisticated man should behave. Seriously.

In an interview with an English channel, Mr. CM said (along these lines)-

Sandeeps mother, Sandeeps family told me sandeeps father his mental  is not good (gestures with finger to forehead).

Perfect !

Google Local – Stickers for promotion

Friday, November 14th, 2008

Yesterday night, just found this interesting sticker stuck at a local eatery near Kaloor International Stadium, Cochin. It was stuck at the cashiers point.

On enquiry the owner said that some chaps from the Al-Ameen College stuck it for promoting Google Local. Sounds very interesting.

What happens in Kerala on a harthal day?

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

This video is self explanatory.
When there’s a big debate happening on who makes harthals successful, this video probably has the answer to it.
The common man is indifferent to harthals, sometimes even has no clue why a harthal occurs. If someone wants to make his living even on Harthal day, he is not allowed to do so. And we all are wise, not cowards – right?

Kerala police’s official cyber crime cell unsafe to visit?

Friday, August 8th, 2008

I read a newspaper article today in Malayala Manorama, Cochin edition that the Kerala Police have launched a specialized cell against cyber crimes in Kerala. Excited that I was, went on to search for the site on Google, and see what I found.

kerala-police-crime-cell

The Kerala government’s official cyber crime website is labelled as “malware infected” and “unsafe for browsing” by Google!

kerala-police-crime-cell-warning

Further details from Google were as below.

What is the current listing status for www.keralapolice.org/newsite/?

Site is listed as suspicious – visiting this web site may harm your computer.

What happened when Google visited this site?

Of the 1 pages we tested on the site over the past 90 days, 0 page(s) resulted in malicious software being downloaded and installed without user consent. The last time Google visited this site was on 07/19/2008, and suspicious content was never found on this site within the past 90 days.

Has this site acted as an intermediary resulting in further distribution of malware?

Over the past 90 days, www.keralapolice.org/newsite/ did not appear to function as an intermediary for the infection of any sites.

Has this site hosted malware?

No, this site has not hosted malicious software over the past 90 days.

How did this happen?

In some cases, third parties can add malicious code to legitimate sites, which would cause us to show the warning message.

This raises more questions than answers.

So, what happened to the site? Did someone hack into the site to install malicious software? If so, why isn’t Kerala Police cyber cell doing anything about it? What will happen to the public who visits the site? Aren’t their systems at risk?

Ironical isn’t it?

Dasan and Vijayan in Orkut

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008

Remember Kerala’s all time favorite, evergreen duo Dasan and Vijayan?

As time passed by, both of them have taken their own line of lives. Dasan (B.Com first class) is a software engineer while Vijayan (Pre-degree fail) is minister for NRI malayalees.

They scrap to and fro on Orkut many a times, here’s a screenshot.
