Good bye IPL

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

ipl It was a mistake they were forced to make. If I were in Mr. Modi’s shoes, I’d be heart broken, to see an IPL opening match played to half empty stands.

The problem is that IPL have had its USPs ripped off. No bollywood, no magic, no songs, no locals, no girls, no fun, no entertainment.

Its no more an IPL.

So long IPL.. Here’s my Tweet to you.

I prefer pirated VCD’s than going to movies in Kerala

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

pirated-vcd Don’t get me wrong. I do understand the seriousness of pirated DVD’s and VCD’s. I know how much revenue is lost from the film makers. I do respect their efforts as well. But sadly, I have to say, though I hate to – that I prefer to watch movies on pirated CD’s at home.

And I think I have a fair reason.

Since I relocated back to Cochin, I’ve been visiting the movies regularly (like I always have at all places I’ve been to – a good movie bluff that I am). I only go out with my family, and I do watch a good number of movies. Which makes me believe that I’m a decent potential “customer” – with pleasure.

But unlike in Chennai, Mumbai or Bangalore, I don’t seem to quite enjoy the movie going experience in Kerala. I hate to say this, but I have no threads to save. I thought its just me, but no, my family too declared after the first few months that in Kerala, its not that quite enjoyable.

The reasons are fair if not plenty.

I can’t find one theatre in Cochin city that has a planned car park.

There is no proper advanced booking (No no…of course I know there is one where they give you a number written on a small chit of paper).

There are always sweaty queues (even after booking) and rush which I hate.

Forget the theatre, I can’t find any place that has a proper rest room or even a walk way with fans at least.

Its alright if I were going to movies alone or with my friends. But when I’m with my family, its very un comfortable.

I’m not trying to exaggerate here or trying to belittle the theatres in Kerala. Its just my frustration that why aren’t anyone, (the film makers/ theatre owners) or who ever is responsible, is not doing anything about making the movie going experience pleasureable ?

I’m sure most of us love going to movies, despite all of us having DVD players at home. Its because of the love for the art form and the fun of it.

But gentlemen, if you want to save the film industry, please, you better look into this. Make better theatres, where people love to go, not a place for sweating it out. The rush and hustle is fun of course, but is that the only crowd you want to focus on ?

So next time when you appear on TV requesting us not to buy pirated VCD’s, please fucking understand that not everyone like you gets invited for premieres. We love movies as much as you do and we don’t want to help “thieves” either.

In my honest and humble opinion, the term “thief” better suits you and the theatre owners than the guy who sells pirated stuff. We pay you to watch movies and relax. You are not doing a favor for us by letting us in, alright ? Well, if you think it is – god bless the industry.

(Not intended to hurt anyone. Purely out of frustration.)

Celebrating Vishu at Cochin

Monday, April 13th, 2009

This time around, its going to be a damp Vishu, or so does it seem from the marathon rain. (Implied as continuing showers).

Vishu is like the “New Year” at this part of the world, according to the Hindu religion. It basically means a lot of exciting stuff to me. Crackers, Vishukani and “Kaineettam”, the two main things that top the charts. We crack a lot of crackers through the night and literally burn the floor. You know, even after you grow up, there are these little things that you fancy about, that you carried over from your childhood.

Any ways, it might be the rains or the lifestyle change, not too many crackers are “heard” these days, despite new crackers being imported from China.

As I’m writing this, its almost 7.30 pm and the rain is still “On”. Contrast to the vishu of my childhood when there were no rains and only crackers.

I’ve bought crackers too, yeah the chinese ones and I’m waiting for the rain to stop. Hopefully, I’ll crack them tonite, or its a postponed Vishu.

Hope Vishu (Or baisakhi) at your place is fun and there are no rains out there.

Notable quotes from Steve that you might find inspiring

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

steve-jobs

Not all CEOs are inspiring. Don’t want to even think about naming them ‘cos if I do, I might just go on editing/updating the article frequently, so let me stick to the inspiring ones, you know the ones with the halo – like Steve, Steve Jobs that is.

Steve despite his recent fumbles, stand out to be the best in the league of inspiring personalities, at least in my perspective.

OK, let me try to describe – He’s a wise, clever, tough, re-invented, self studied, disciplined person who can make things (esp things he makes) look really simple yet powerful and breathtaking. Be it apple or his life.

Now, that might be the Mac fan in me but guess its fair enough.

Here’s a nice piece of article I found recently at Mario Sundar’s blog.

The top and the best quotes from Steve Jobs – of all time.

This is what I call bookmark stuff !

12042009272My son Dhruvan just turned two yesterday and that makes me wonder how quick one year has passed by.

We had a small celebration with folks and neighbors come by and Dhuvi ended up with quite some toys to his kitty.

Had a fun time and the only prob was that he wouldn’t cut the cake no matter how much I’d insist. :D

Munching Masala Dosas with Madras style Coffee

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

May be its a southie thing, but Masala Dosas and Madras style filter coffee is for ever refreshing and an anytime favorite of mine. And my search for the typical southie Masala Dosas end at Gokul Oottupura restaurant at Kadavanthra.

A little pushed away from the main road and the hazzle and buzzle, situated at  the beginning tip of Kadavanthra – Kaloor road, this restaurant is a different experience altogether. It’s pure delight at Gokul because apart from the quality food, the ambience at this place is very soothing and turns on your comfy switch in an instant.

With a typical tea-shop like interiors there’s lot of space and energy. Wooden benches and tables welcome you, unlike the cushioned ones at most other restaurants. Reminds me of the typical Kerala style nair tea-shops. There’s also wall paintings/murals done with an ethnic yet minimalistic touch and some soothing lightning.

And of course the most important part is the quality food. Very clean and tasty food that you can see getting prepared yourself in the open kitchen. Quite humbly this is the best I have tasted in the entire cochin, when it comes to vegetarian food. And its also remarkable that price tag won’t leave a hole in your pocket. Very reasonable pricing for the quality they offer.

If you happen to visit Cochin, and is looking for some nice vegetarian restaurant, step in confidently to Gokul Oottupura. My guarantee !
