Subramaniyapuram – Must watch

Friday, August 29th, 2008

I’m not best at writing movie reviews but this one, I’d never want to miss out.
Wonderful – is the word to describe it, true in all senses. An excellent and apt cast, very original yet enjoyable portrayal of life, an excellent story, brilliant performance by the lead actor Jay and some very enjoyable music is the main attraction for the movie.

Out of the recent movies in Tamil, excluding all the formula numbers and masala items, I had enjoyed Anjjathey and Kadavul, which were all part of the “no frills – no nonsense” wave of new Tamil cinema and was quite impressed by the new perspective and the new talents that were brought out through them. In fact, Anjaathey was so impressive that I thought there was no other regional movie that inspired me like it in recent times. But subramaniyapuram is way better than Anjaathey.

Jay – the lead actor is wonderful. Just take the two mins stint towards the last where he dies is enough to explain his potential. Marvellous performace.

Don’t go for my words, but please watch the movie, if you enjoy “realistic” movies. I’ll bet that this one won’t bore you but linger in your thoughts even after you leave the cinema hall.

Sreesanth’s reputation management classes are working !

Friday, August 29th, 2008

Yesterday, while watching TV with my family, the new Pepsi ad came up. Dhoni, pepsi..and all that. Soon after the ad was over, everyone burst out into laugh – simultaneously! Reason – Sreesanth and his “some sort of a dance”.

Everyone had a indifferent, numb, sympathetic look after it, watching him dance. “Paavam .. Ingane ayallo!” (poor chap..)

Srees
Sreesanth
Sree

I think Pepsi ad makers couldn’t have done anything better, but let him do what he is best for. Make a lunatic, loose guy out of him. I can understand my family’s reactions about Sreesanth, and that’s completely natural, after all they didn’t know that Sreesanth had a reputation management crash course done. And all this is part of a big game plan. But I knew it, right from his early days of career.

I should congratulate Mr. Sreesanth for his hard earned reputation. Who else in the Indian cricket team has done these many “carefully thought and operated strategies” to achieve his public brand image? I suspect the “Bhajji – Sreesanth” saga was a carefully executed drama, to leverage Sree’s image in public.

These days people don’t care about image being good or bad you know. People should talk a bout you, that’s all. If you are a male, you act like a lunatic, dance like a weirdo, or develop six packs, or even hang around with bollywood babes to appear in Page 3 news. If you are a female, you have very less options, but to show more skin. In fact, some young blood like Rakhi Sawant does that beautifully well on the channels.

Rakhi Sawant

I think there are somethings common with young strugglers like Rakhi Sawant and Sreesanth, you know they both come from the relatively unknown parts of India and they have to struggle more than the better off guys to make an impression. So I think what Rakhi did with Mika, and Sreesanth did with Priyanka Chopra is perfectly fine. Today who can imagine an Indian team without Sreesanth? Moreover, today cricket is all about emotions and drama and less “gentlemans” game. We all need more action, more fun right?

Poor Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, in their times people did not have television at homes, and there was a limit to what could’ve been done on Newspapers.(i hear Sunil Gavaskar had made good attempts in England trying to hit a white guy with his cricket bat, and that he was the first to start the “racial abuse” controversies.) But I know why he did that, at that time, Sunil was also a struggler like Rakhi Sawant and Sreesanth.

Coming back to Sreesanth, I want to tell him hmm….one thing, yea one thing.

Sree, nobody in the world(family, friends excluded) knows that you went to reputation management classes, except me. I know for a fact that you are doing this as a part of “career management” and you are making more money than anyone else in the team.
I also know that you have been obssesed with “personality development” books like “How to win friends and influence people” by Dale Carnegie from your childhood.(courtesy malayala manorama). So I’m not surprised to see you do all this “strategies”, which is actually the manifestation of the business acumen in you.

Way to go Sree…way to go. Oh yea..my question – “What’s next?”

Malayala Manorama’s obsession with “blue” tooth

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

There should be a genuine reason why they are boldly at it, I’m damn sure.
What shall I call it – “Youth empowerment” ? Yes, that’s a comparatively lighter title for a commendable effort from Manorama.

Manorama is all set to do a “jan jagran” on the “blue tooth culture in Kerala”. And if you have no idea the seriousness of this issue, watch out for front pages of Manorama when there is no harthals or scoops. There would most likely be a “news article” on the new media culture, youtube, blue tooth etc and how they are making the young blood of Kerala notorious on the internet. If you want to push this aside as “yellow journalism” then my friend you are mistaken, I’d say you are rather a “non-responsible citizen” who does not understand the importance of fighting against the impending of the evils of ur society.

Malayala Manorama

Manorama have two stories to their credit on “blue tooth” until now, one on todays frontpage and another on a sunday mag (cochin edition). And I can guess how disturbed they are with this, as is a responsible citizen of free India.

What is the big evil that’s cropped up in our society today?

Mobile phones, Blue tooth, MMS, YouTube, Sleazy SMS – yep big time! If you want to know how MMS are being made, ask Manorama. Manorama’s authors know exactly how they are being made, executed and distributed across. They have illustrated each MMS story with the taste of a film script, so that even the school going children can comprehend it and understand the consequences of it. That’s a commedable effort I salute. Had they written about arrests and legal consequences of the evil, people would be disinterested for sure. So instead of writing about how to stop it, or what the truth is, Manorama takes a bold stand of illustrating each MMS stories with their stories, how they are made, who’s behind it etc so that it is palatable to everyone. Perfect plot!

According to Manorma, they have all the inside stories and details of the movie clips being circulated on the internet and mobile phones, their creators state of mind, the clips script, their plot and location, the actors, their complaints, petitions, police reports and all that.

So all those guys running the sleazy websites and porn discussion boards, beware, one day Manorama will catch you red handed. We have started a revolution to empower the youth against impending dangers from these evil deeds.

Towards a “Blue tooth less Kerala” !

Where are all the iPhone lovers in India ?

Monday, August 25th, 2008

Or let’s say why didn’t you buy the beauty yet ? Is this true?

Let me tell you a little story.

Vodafone had the “booking” started long before the actual release date right ? And this was much “perceived” to be the “strategy to curb the uncontrollable demand” for the iPhone.

Interestingly, I visited the cochin office on Aug 22nd to check how things are heating up. And to my surprise (underline that) the guys were totally confused about the whole thing. They had no brochures, no details and pathetically no clue of the features available on the iPhone. All they had was the data plans to study.

I thought (well from the talked about discussions) that there would be a guy who would’ve been “taught” how to handle a iPhone customer.

I expressed my interest in buying an iPhone (disguise let’s say) and they were indifferent to it.

“Oh..ok sir..pls give me your number I’ll call you back (this guy must be crazy)” – Said and thought the representative.

Clearly, there were no bookings made, no training given to the staff, and it just cemented my guess that this is a case study for “How not to ape a business model for totally dissimilar environments”.

And then the “price” happened. Kaboom! There you go – iPhone in India is history, a failed product.

All those jail breaks and grey market winners out there..salutes to you, you guys are clever!

Check the stats and reports like this one here.

And I wonder where did all the “iPhone supporters” go ? Did you guys get a discount or something ?

Akashagopuram – First International Malayalam film? (Oh..alright…!)

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

Just like you, I’ve been wondering from ever since I heard this “description” – “Malayalam’s first International Film”, what exactly does it mean?
There have been numerous movies that have gone to the International film festivals.
There have also been malayalam films that have had participation from foreign artists.
There have also been malayalam movies that have been filmed outside the country.

Despite all this, the movie has been proclaimed “first International malayalam movie” – confusing.

So I thought to do some research and found out these facts about the movie. The story of the movie
- Akashagopuram is set in the background of London where Mohan Lal plays an architect.
- The production house is India based, Medient
- Cinemautography is by Santosh Thundiyil (remember Krrish?)
- Music is by John Altman (Done music for Titanic)
- Sound design is done by Nigel Holland. (Batman begins)
- Visual effects by John Harvey and Jonathan Hussler (Kingdom of heaven)
Also many artists like make up men are from outside the country, and the post production work has been done in the UK.

So does that qualify for the film to be called “First International film from Malayalam”? I serioulsy doubt.

The effort from the director Mr. Kumaran is a commendable one. When we are complaining about “storyless-ness” and “technical diarrhea”, this might be a practical solution he found out. But bollywood and other language movies like Telugu and Tamil still has a lot of involvement from hollywood and “foreign” artists, I’ve never ever heard anyone call any such movie as “International telugu movie” or “International tamil movie”. Interesting !

So I’m thinking, had the artists been all “foreign” and not mallus, then you might have missed the opportunity to call this movie “First International” right?

(A movie buff friend of mine says International movies to him means “chinese, vietnamese, italian etc” – Food for thought there.)

What happens in Kerala on a harthal day?

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

This video is self explanatory.
When there’s a big debate happening on who makes harthals successful, this video probably has the answer to it.
The common man is indifferent to harthals, sometimes even has no clue why a harthal occurs. If someone wants to make his living even on Harthal day, he is not allowed to do so. And we all are wise, not cowards – right?

Kerala Citizen Bloggers is live – Pls join if you think similar

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

As mentioned at BlogcampKerala, as an initiative to popularize “citizen blogging” and to provide a platform for passionate bloggers with social responsibility, the KCB project (Kerala Citizen Bloggers) is now live at www.keralacitizenbloggers.com

To me along with the five authors who’ve already joined hands at KCB, this is exciting. Dinu, Kenney, Anand and Juwal have pledged their contributions to the initiative and has already started their efforts.

For those who don’t know about it yet, KCB is an initiative from us bloggers who wants to raise our voice through a shared platform, against and along with the social issues around us that we all see, hear and live with. We are not revolutionists or rebels but the common mans eyes and ears. We discuss what everyone hears and we show what everyone sees.

A very simple non complicated concept, where through “group blogging” we try to grab attention towards the often neglected..seemingly “non-harmful” yet serious things around us in Kerala. It may be a consistent traffic block at a junction, or an offensive ad on that billboard, or a broken road in the locality that’s worth showing others.

We all maintain personal blogs and the initiative too will remain personal and does not reflect any thoughts of a community or group, but personal views of a group of bloggers (which grows everyday as anyone who has a valid story can contribute), who wants to tell the world a simple story – about the world we live in.

If you are passionate about it and has an interesting story you want to illustrate, feel free to join the team. Or you can subscribe to the feeds and show your opinion on the comments.

iPhone price in India – Big disappointment!

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

There’s no doubt that iPhone will remain a premium commodity and not a crowd puller in India. You’ve seen why.

Now, there’s even more to worry.

An iPhone in India will cost you INR – 36,000 for a 16GB model.
In the US, a 16GB Apple iPhone 3G is available at $299 (around INR 12,259). So an Apple iPhone 3G in India will cost you three times as that of it’s original price. WOW!

For non-believers, Check out this news from Reuters.

iPhone India Price

I suspect this is a much thought after “premium pricing” strategy from Apple (or whoever is behind it in India), because they already know that it’s not going to be popular even if the price is kept lower.

So who’s going to take it for 36,000 Rs with no 3G, and all the other list of drawbacks?

Kerala Blogcamp – I’d love to be there next time

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

It was good and great..kickass!
I think there’s something all “unconferences” can learn from this blogcamp, if the venue is different, then it adds that charm and excitement to the event. Been to techno parks and cyber parks, board rooms and indoor stadiums but let me be honest with this, the joy of sailing on a house boat is something that’s exciting. I won’t even try to describe how the food was, I’m not good at it, but it was truly -”kerala”. Not trying to say that all blogcamps has to be on boats but if we can make them outside the board rooms or “echoey” halls it’s always great.

The gathering was diverse and spread out. Around 120 guys from different streams, students, geeks, entrepreneurs, cartoonists, farmer turned bloggers, singers, and lot of enthusiastic bloggers. Can you ask for more?

Pradip Somasundaran, popular playback singer opened up a good discussion on Audio Blogging and ultimately was pushed to reveal out trade secrets of popular singers, when he disclosed that they use sophisticated audio softwares and pitch manipulating plugins. He was talking on softwares, hardwares and publishing platforms for audio bloggers.

Kenney Jacob had a good presentation on his passionate topic – Campus Blogging.

Kerala Farmer – is a true inspiration and representative of passion towards blogging. This gentleman from kerala is a farmer, who finds time out to blog (on his numerous regional language blogs) even when he has to find time to cultivate and look after his poultry. I was amazed to see his technological expertise in regional blogging, linux and blogging platforms. As a matter of fact he had discontinued his education after the tenth grade. (And he’s currently in his 60’s) He has revealed many “disturbing facts” he himself found out from the Governments data, which he says is often corrupt and misleading. He intends to bring forth truth on these through his blog and rightly says – “Blogs are my weapons!

Sanjjeev, a popular cartoonist from kerala had all the crowd around him, as he was busy sketching cartoons of almost everyone in the boat. 120 of them!

I was doubtful on what knowledge level should I address the gathering on SEO, as they were diverse, but somehow pulled it off with hints on profitable blogging, and how seo and social media can help you. I have the slide uploaded on Slideshare – not a great one, but you may like it.
